Spotlight on S.J. Neathawk Lumber Company!

We recently sat down with SJ Goodwin and asked him a number of questions about the business, his family’s legacy and what he is most looking forward to in the future.

Can you tell us about S.J. Neathawk Lumber Company and your services?

”We have been serving Virginia & West Virginia since 1947 with quality lumber, hardware and expert support for builders, contractors, and homeowners alike.

My great grandfather founded the company and before that worked at a sawmill in the early 1920s where he would grade lumber. He later saw there was a need for contractors to get materials and opened S.J. Neathawk Lumber Company’s original location.
From there it grew to lumber to contractors to building materials and more! We now have 85 employees across four locations: Covington, VA; Roanoke, VA; Montvale, VA; and Lewisburg, WV.

Our Covington location opened in 2008 and is a Hardware Store with a Lumber Yard. You can find STIHL, paint, agriculture products, tools, wood stoves and more. We can also help with flooring, windows (Sierra Pacific Windows is a very popular product line), doors, millwork, roofing, concrete and drywall. We have 15 employees at this location.

We love helping our customers build custom homes. When we have a homeowner that is coming in to build a house that they have been dreaming of, we strive to build trust and get them the best product for the price they need to be at. We want to build a partnership with our customers and provide personalized support that creates a long-term relationship for years to come!”

What does it mean to you to continue your family business/legacy of quality and service in the region and support our Alleghany Highlands community?

”Family is extremely important and we are so fortunate that my grandmother, father, uncle, cousin and I can continue my great grandfather’s legacy of working hard and providing for our community. There is nothing else I would want to be doing! It is everything for me. As a family, we are passionate about serving our community and participate in the Covington Christmas Parade every year and also regularly support the Boys’ Home.”

Does S.J. Neathawk Lumber Company have any exciting news or company updates that you’d like to share?

”We recently launched a new website and we are focused on enhancing our digital presence (make sure you are following us on social media!) to share our story and what sets us apart – our family’s legacy and how we care about this region we call home.”

What are you most excited about for the future of the company and the Alleghany Highlands?

”We’re excited to be having conversations about expanding housing in the Alleghany Highlands as we need more homes and more housing options in the region. We live in a beautiful area and it’s important to have housing to keep people here to have a place to raise a family.

As for  S.J. Neathawk Lumber Company, we are looking towards the next generation and training our newest team members to carry on our tradition of excellence! The future is so bright!”
